Why talking your problems out never works? The power of somatic work explained.

Updated: Jun 9, 2023

Talking about your challenges might be very helpful but if you really want to thrive in your relationships and personal life, working on your mindset only won't do the trick...

all the emotions and sensations are experienced in the body, so it kind of makes sense that in order to make changes in your life such as feeling more confident, ecstatic & empowered, we will have to work on our embodiment, right?

People often tell me that working with me even if it’s just for a few months provides more tangible results than sitting in a therapist’s office for years so I thought that it'd be interesting to bring some geeky wisdom here and explain this magical phenomenon ;)

Before I continue I want to say that I’m not claiming that my work is better than therapy. It’s therapeutic, but it’s different. I don’t focus on a trauma-healing process. If it naturally arises, as a trauma-trained coach I know how to guide the release process safely, but it’s not what I’m focusing on in my work. My role is to help you embody your highest potential without digging much into the past. Being in your bliss here & now and embodying your desires - that's our focus.

So.. Let's start with explaining what my work is all about 🙂

A word on the science behind somatic coaching & embodiment and why it works when most mindset-based therapies/ coaching don't...

Somatic Coaching is a pioneering trauma-informed approach to coaching known for its effective results backed up by the latest scientific research proving it works.

Somatic Coaching draws on the schools of somatic psychotherapy Gestalt, Focusing and Hakomi and incorporates the latest research from Neuroscience, Embodied Cognition, Interpersonal Neurobiology and Polyvagal Theory.

SOMA means body in Greek and somatics refers to the inner dialogue with the intelligence of the body and its cellular memory.

Most of the conceptual approaches to coaching are only focused on the mind, therefore results are short-lived and more difficult to achieve. The inquiry of somatic coaching acknowledges the connection between the psyche & our biology, physiology and neurobiology bringing more wholeness, a felt sense of safety and long-lasting results.

Why learning how to embody your innate intelligence is important?

As children, we learn how to experience the world through all of the senses in our bodies without shame or overthinking.

As adults, we still use our sensory systems mainly to orient to pleasure or escape danger.

Experiencing the world through our bodies is a primal way of being in the world. It determines our thoughts, emotional states and actions.

In our adult life, most of us have learnt how to use our minds brilliantly but are disconnected from the body, its wisdom, and we are disconnected from the ability to receive important information that is being sent from the body to our conscious awareness.

Every day 80 % of information that travels to our brain is sourced from the body, and 20 % is carried from the brain to the body. Through somatic coaching, you will be able to tap into the 80% of information that is often overlooked in mindset-only-based modalities.

That's the most important skill to learn, don't you think so? I'll tell you more about the benefits of somatic coaching, just keep scrolling..

What is Embodiment?

Embodiment is a process of integrating parts of ourselves, feeling, sensing and realising their connection to the whole.

It is simply a way of being in the world. It is a lifestyle devoted to returning home to safety, presence, pleasure and wholeness.

To embody means to manifest. To make changes and new ways of being in the world tangible, visible and real.

The reason why my clients get to experience permanent shifts is that every single session is based on those major factors:

1. The felt sense of safety in the body - I guide them through practices in which they learn how to feel safe, open & curious. I also prioritise the well-being of my own nervous system and embodied emotional intelligence, so I can bring that to the session too, making our connection more nourishing and safe thanks to the magic of attunement.

2. Connection - we heal in the presence of safe connections. The relationship between a somatic coach and a coachee is a powerful catalyst for improving all of your relationships, but most importantly, the relationship you have with yourself.

As a result, their bodies are ready to process & let go of emotions that were blocking them previously. The mind comes up with new solutions.

3. Focusing on the felt sense of the situation instead of letting the monkey mind take over - they learn how to tap into the wisdom of the body (your nervous system & the cells in your body carry 80%of the information you need - it’s quite a useful skill to have:)

There is so much more in my toolkit but these three things are fundamental in facilitating the process of long-lasting change.

The essence of my work is to teach people how to create safety and a sense of openness so the organic intelligence of the body can lead them.

I never tell anyone what to do.

My job is to empower you by guiding you to find your own answers that come from a deeper place than a biased mind ❤️

It’s the feeling of being safe to experience all of you and getting out of the familiar comfort zone with curiosity & playfulness that helps you get out of the cage you often find yourself in.

Is there anything in your life that you even gave up a thought that it’s possible to change?

If your answer is yes know that’s just your extraordinary mind trying to “protect you”. There is nothing wrong with you. You are a perfect masterpiece in progress ;)

Benefits of somatic coaching based on research, my client work & my own embodied experience:

  1. Improved body awareness & intuition: Somatic coaching helps clients become more aware of their bodily sensations, emotions, and thoughts. This heightened awareness allows them to recognize and manage their feelings and behaviours better (embodied emotional intelligence).

  2. Decreased stress and anxiety: By focusing on the body and breathing, somatic coaching can help clients relax and reduce stress and anxiety. This can also help with improving sleep and reducing feelings of fatigue.

  3. Improved communication & deeper connection in relationships: Somatic coaching can help clients better understand and express their emotions and needs, ultimately leading to healthier communication and relationships with others.

  4. Increased self-confidence & self-esteem: Somatic coaching can help clients gain a deeper understanding of their inner selves and learn to trust their instincts, ultimately leading to greater self-confidence and self-esteem.

  5. Increased mindfulness: Somatic coaching can improve mindfulness, which is the ability to be present at the moment and fully engaged in the present experience. This can lead to greater creativity, productivity, and overall well-being.

& some more...

Through the body, you will discover deeper longings, feelings, subconscious beliefs and your highest potential.

Through the body, you'll get to know who you are authentically

Through the body, you will connect with the organic intelligence embedded in your cellular memory

You will embody qualities that are valuable to you.

Experiencing life as an embodied human being will help you be more compassionate, and connected to yourself, creating deeper intimacy with others and nature.

AND my favourite one...

You'll experience life from authentic sensations and feelings in the body instead of the fantasy & projectors of the mind.

How does that sound to you?

With love & bliss,

❤️

A.
